The Ballet Folklorico de Riverside was founded in 1976 by Ana de la Tejera, to preserve the Mexican Culture and Heritage through traditional Mexican dances. When she first started, she and 13 children would practice in garages and on driveways. Now, more than 100 dancers, as young as 5 years old, present traditional Mexican Folk Dances for the public to enjoy.
Of these traditional dances, they include more than 33 regions of Mexico and eras in the history of Mexico. Traditional stories and rituals that have been passed along to each generation are the backbone to these amazing dances. Some of the regions included in these performances consists of the states of Jalisco, the Mexican Revolution, the historical periods of the Azteca Indians, and Veracruz.
The dancers actually perform on a voluntary basis and the organization has a very modest staff, many parents and community volunteers. This organization tells a story through movement and music. If you have young children that are interested in dance, consider signing them up at Ballet Folklorico de Riverside.
